Could you be sabotaging your Las Vegas custody case?

It takes little for a child custody case to become a heated, passionate battle over who ‘deserves’ to have primary custody of the children. In most cases, these emotions come from an honest, genuine place: both parents love their children and want to spend as much time with them as possible.

However, in some cases, parents focus only on winning and forget the reason they started fighting in the first place, leading to a long, contentious child custody court battle. If you are engaged in such a fight, you may fall prey to one of the common mistakes that can quickly and easily derail your efforts to gain custody of your children. Below is a list of a few such pitfalls.

  1. Moving in with a significant other: A divorce is a confusing time for children, and most family court judges do not like when a parent adds a new boyfriend or girlfriend into the mix. It is best to keep separate homes until the divorce is final and custody has been decided – and possibly for awhile after that.

  2. Criticizing your spouse to their face or behind their back: Any negative comment you make to or about your spouse has the possibility of making it into court, where it will most certainly have a negative effect on your attempt to gain custody.

  3. Taking your children on vacation without notifying your spouse: During a heated custody battle, this could easily be seen as an attempt to kidnap the kids, even if that is far from the truth. It is best to keep your spouse notified of all out-of-town trips.

  4. Denying telephone contact between your spouse and children: The judge must know that your children are free to communicate with either parent at any time.
