Divorce is an option that many take for granted
When a marriage becomes unsustainable, many Nevada spouses begin to consider the benefits of a divorce. While we may weigh the various outcomes when it comes to matters of property division or child custody, virtually all spouses today take for granted the very ability to end their marriage. In generations past, divorce was simply not an option for unhappy spouses, regardless of how badly the dissolution of a marriage was desired.
Divorce in decades past was scandalous, and altered the prospects of both husbands and wives who left their marriage, However, women have traditionally borne the brunt of the negative repercussions of divorce, as recently as a generation ago. At one time, women who divorced had a very poor prospects of retaining child custody rights. Financial ramifications were felt more acutely by divorced women, as well.
Due to improvements within the workplace, women are now far better able to provide for their own needs and those of their children. Child support laws have also helped women weather the financial fallout of a divorce. In addition, lessened social stigma has made divorce a viable choice for women who seek to end a marriage.
While these changes have all paved the way for an easier divorce process for today’s spouses, it is still imperative that both parties move forward with a full understanding of their rights under Nevada law. The decisions made during a divorce can have lasting effects, and should be made with proper legal counsel. While divorce may be far easier today than in decades past, the end of a marriage is still a weighty matter, and should be handled with care.
